The Chequers, located in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, is a centuries-old coaching inn with a rich history dating back to the 15th century. Originally built in 1450, the timber-framed building has served as a public house for over 500 years. During the 16th century, it was a popular stopover for travelers journeying between London and Oxford.

The inn gained notoriety in 1661 when it became embroiled in a plot against King Charles II. A group of conspirators, including Colonel Adrian Scrope, met at The Chequers to plan the king’s assassination. The plot was discovered, and Scrope was subsequently executed for his involvement.

The Chequers has long been associated with paranormal activity. One of the most frequently reported ghostly encounters involves the spirit of a young girl believed to have died in a fire at the inn during the 17th century. Witnesses have described seeing her apparition in various parts of the building, particularly on the upper floors.

Another haunting presence is that of a Cavalier soldier from the English Civil War era. Staff and guests have reported hearing the sound of boots walking across wooden floors when no one is present. Some have even claimed to see a full-bodied apparition of the soldier in period dress.
